SEDIBENG DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY
Sedibeng region is situated in Southern Gauteng along the scenic Vaal, Klip and Suikerbos rivers. The Vaal River, which forms the natural boundary between Gauteng and the Free State, is not only the area’s greatest asset in terms of providing water to industries in Sedibeng, but also gives life to the whole Gauteng province. The Vaal River Barrage was constructed in 1923 and in 1938 the Vaal Dam was built further upstream.
Sedibeng, which comprises the three local municipalities of: Lesedi, Midvaal and Emfuleni, offers an ideal leisure, adventure and heritage weekend breakaway from city life. Geared to both local and foreign tourists alike, Sedibeng is within easy reach of all Gauteng’s major centres. The region is easily accessible from the R59, which links the region to Johannesburg, the N1, linking Johannesburg and Bloemfontien, and the N3 linking Johannesburg to Durban.
The area is so steeped in political history that even President Thabo Mbeki referred to one of the townships, Evaton, as “Ikhaya Lomzabalazo”- meaning the Cradle of the Struggle. The President could have been referring to any area in Sedibeng, as the region has been at the forefront of political change.
