The South African Sugar Industry is one of the world’s leading cost-competitive producers of high quality sugar, making an important contribution to employment, sustainable development and the economy. This diverse industry combines the agricultural activities of sugarcane cultivation with the industrial factory production of raw and refined sugar, syrups and a range of by-products.
Sugarcane is grown predominantly in KwaZulu-Natal, and in Mpumalanga with a smaller amount in the Eastern Cape. The industry is responsible for generating an annual estimated average direct income of R6 billion. The industry makes an important contribution to direct employment, provides indirect employment for support industries; and approximately one million people depend on the sugar industry for a living.
The South African Sugar Association provides a range of specialised services that enhance the profitability, global competitiveness and sustainability of the South African sugar industry. These services include a research institute, a training centre and both national and international marketing. The Association is also a major contributor to rural development - which includes land reform, education and training, social investment, and the promotion of sound and sustainable practises.
The South African Sugarcane Research Institute is a leading agricultural research institute that is world-renowned for its research into the development of new sugarcane varieties, and improved crop management and farming systems. Based in Mount Edgecombe, SASRI’s research is clustered within three multidisciplinary programmes – variety improvement, crop protection, and resource optimization.
