BERGWATER VINEYARDS VIDEO - PRINCE ALBERT - WESTERN CAPE - SOUTH AFRICA
Bergwater Vineyards is the first winery in the Great Karoo. Designed by local architect Mr John Whitton, the aim is to blend in with the beautiful environment using natural stone and rock. 70 hectares of vineyards are neatly farmed in a holistic and organic way. The rest of the 1500 hectares is preserved as a Nature Reserve. Due to low rainfall, dry climate, cool southerly winds, and cold nights - even in summer - diseases are non-existent. And thus the farm is able to function holistically in harmony with nature. No hazardous sprays are used. Dorper sheep graze between the vineyards during winter and control all the weeds. The sheep manure becomes good compost; meaning that Bergwater does not have to use chemical fertilizers. The healthy holistic grapes which are produced enable the winemaker, Mariska Schreuder, to craft world-class wines. She was selected as a finalist for the Woman Winemaker of the Year competition, on the merits of her Shiraz Reserve. This beautiful wine has been served on KLM’s Royal Business Class for 3 years consecutively. Bergwater Vineyards also offers a fully furnished self-catering guesthouse where guests can relax, drinking world-class wine and experiencing nature and a holistic farming environment.
